Spinel is a really good candidate for the title of “History’s Most Under appreciated Gem.” Some ancient mines that supplied gems for royal courts from Rome to China produced spinel, but it was usually confused with better-known stones like ruby and sapphire. Until recently, spinel was an under appreciated gem with little consumer recognition. Increasing demand for ruby alternatives rekindled appreciation for spinel’s rich red color and history. Spinel is a wonderful and less costly alternative to ruby and sapphire. In ancient times, southeast Asia’s mines yielded exceptional large spinel crystals, which became the treasured property of kings and emperors, often passing through many hands as spoils of war.
BLACK PRINCE
The famous 14th century Black Prince’s Ruby in the British Imperial Crown is actually a red spinel.
Spinel comes in a variety of colors, but the most commercially important are red and pink. Mauve- or lilac-colored spinels are also attractive, and some blue spinel colors can be intense. Red, pink, lilac, and blue are commercially important spinel colors. We also love Grey Spinel, they are stunning, especially when set with diamonds in white gold or platinum.
